Orear Institute for Post-Graduate Medical Studies

The Orear Institute for Post-Graduate Medical Studies was established through the generous support of Richard and Charlotte Orear. Their personal physician, Dr. Lenny Viril inspired the Orears to establish the endowment to promote the Orear Institute’s mission of “Providing continuing medical education on recent advances in clinical medicine by the nation’s premier educators.”

Until his mid-90s, Dr. Lenny Viril remained on the steering committee for the annual CME conference that remains the hallmark work of the Orear Institute: the Recent Advances in Medicine Conference – Including evidence-based integrative medicine. While Richard and Charlotte Orear are now deceased, their legacy lives on in the Orear Institute’s Recent Advances in Medicine Conference, which has been held annually since 1988.

This conference—which includes evidence-based integrative medicine—serves physicians, physician assistants and advanced nurse practitioners with a variety of educational formats that encourage lively discussion between attendees and speakers. Conference speakers are composed of some of the nation’s leading experts with the opportunity to learn about recent advances in medicine, network with peers, and connect with leaders in the medical field.

Information regarding the Trinity Lutheran School of Nursing Alumnae Scholarship may be found here. Only one application form is necessary to be considered for both scholarships.

  • Q: How do I get my scholarship payment?
Your scholarship will be awarded in two payments. To get those payments, you are required to do the following:

Submit a copy of your invoice for tuition showing your name, student ID, a breakdown of expenses showing tuition paid, and amount owed. If you are using a screenshot from an online portal, please be sure that it is saved as a .pdf and, when printed, shows all the necessary information. Failure to do so will result in a request for you to resubmit your invoice. If you are unclear about how to acquire this, please contact your college’s financial aid or business office for assistance.

Have a copy of your official transcript mailed or e-mailed to the BTLLF office. Please be sure it reflects last semester grades. It must be an official transcript mailed through the U.S. Mail or sent via an online transcript service that your college uses to: 6675 Holmes Rd., Ste. 470; Kansas City, MO 64131 or nursingscholarships@btllf.org. Please see your registrar’s office if you have any questions regarding how to do this.

These two steps must be followed for BOTH the fall and spring semester.

The time periods for requesting scholarship payments from our office are as follows:

Fall Semester Payment: August 1-October 31 (All spring grades must be posted)

Spring Semester Payment: December 1-February 28 (All fall grades must be posted)

Failure to meet these deadlines will forfeit your scholarship for that semester. It is your responsibility to submit for your payments and provide the correct information in a timely manner. If you have questions, please call 816-276-7516 or e-mail at nursingscholarships@btllf.org.

Q: When can I expect to receive my scholarship payment?
    1. Upon receipt of all the required information from you, please allow 2-3 weeks for processing of payment in our office.

    2. Your scholarship payment will be sent directly to your college for credit to your student account. As a reminder, it is for tuition only. Should your financial need change, please let us know so we may adjust your payment accordingly or your college may notify us.

    3. You will receive an e-mail notifying you when the scholarship payment has been mailed.

Q: What if my college is saying that they have not received the payment?
    1. Ask yourself first, “Has an adequate amount of time gone by since receiving notification that the check was mailed?” You will want to include time related to distance of your college, their internal mail system, and their accounting office’s procedures for posting a payment, etc.

    2. If the college has searched their records for the payment, you may reach out to our office for further information to aid them in their search.

    3. Finally, after all efforts have been exhausted, we will search our bank records to verify if a check has been cashed or not. If it has, then it is the responsibility of your college to address the accounting error. If not, we will reissue a check after three full weeks following the mail date of your payment.

Q: What could keep me from receiving my scholarship payment?
You have not submitted all the necessary information to receive the payment. This must be done for BOTH the fall and spring payment.

Your cumulative grade point average has dropped below 3.0.

You have not maintained a full-time academic schedule.

The check was lost in transit. Please utilize all efforts previously listed to locate your payment.

You did not submit for payment during the time periods listed for doing so.
